Presenters:  Michael P. Gardner, Principal  and R. Patrick Boling, Principal at Woods Rogers Vandeventer Black 

Mike is a principal of the firm’s Labor & Employment, Appellate Law, and Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice groups.

He focuses his practice almost exclusively on labor and employment issues and has represented clients large and small, public and private, in state and federal courts in the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Mike holds Martindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent rating—the highest possible—in both legal ability and ethical standards. This honor is bestowed from confidential surveys of members of the Bar and Judiciary. He has also been recognized as a Virginia Super Lawyer since 2016 as a Virginia Business magazine “Legal Elite” since 2018.

Patrick solves workforce issues in collaboration with human resource professionals and other company leaders.

As part of the firm’s Labor & Employment team, he helps his clients make day-to-day employment decisions, design and implement fair and effective employment policies, contracts and handbooks, conduct workplace investigations, and prevent disputes from becoming litigation. Patrick’s additional experience in transactional business matters allows him to offer depth and context to decision-makers beyond the employment setting. When necessary, Patrick aggressively defends employers, primarily in state and federal regulatory actions and civil litigation related to discrimination, wrongful termination, harassment, and retaliation under equal employment opportunity laws.

Patrick sits on the Boards of Directors for The Williams Home and the Virginia Legal Aid Society, where he also regularly takes pro bono cases. He also serves on the Executive Board of the Young Lawyer’s Division of the Virginia Bar Association.

Presenter:  Deirdre E. Rainey, LPC

Dee Rainey is a Licensed Professional Counselor and brings thirty-six years of Behavioral Health experience with all age groups.  In her current role as Clinical Manager at HealthworksEAP she continues the strategic development and implementation of Employee Assistance Program services for Centra.  She has over eighteen years of Leadership experience with various types of mental health facilities and age groups. Her project management and collaborations include implementing and Improving Team Engagement for the Service Line and the Application of Human Resource best practices such as Coaching, Employee Improvement Plans, Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, “All In” culture and engagement trainer.    Ms. Rainey has a Bachelors of Science in  Criminal Justice with a Concentration in Childhood Development from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Masters of Education in Agency Counseling from Lynchburg College.
